Featherweight is the counterbalance system developed by multiple world champion Ivan Lawler.
Your modern wing paddle has a significant assymetry which causes a natural tendency for the blades, which are heavier toward the top, to roll forward if you relax your grip completely. This turning force, or torque, has to be resisted by the muscles in your hand, wrist and forearm. This causes fatigue over time. By carrying the small extra weight your paddle actually feels lighter because it is now balanced.
Once set up, the counterweight may be removed by hand to store your paddle, and refitted without changing the balance.
